Everyone has the potential to be a saint. As a matter of fact, God calls each one of us to be a saint. Living our lives in the pursuit of holiness may sound impossible to some, but the example we have of the saints who have gone before us should give us hope. They are a compilation of people with real problems and issues. And yet, they rose above it all and continued their journey toward holiness with their eyes fixed on God and doing His will. I love reading about the lives of the Saints because they are so inspirational. They had similar problems like anyone else but they picked up their cross and trusted God.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, (1774-1821), our first American born saint, battled depression as an adolescent and even contemplated suicide. She established the first Catholic school in America and started the Sisters of Charity. St Gianna Beretta Molla, (1922-1962) was a physician, a working mom, professional woman, and a loving wife. She died from complications after giving birth to her 4th child. Her story is so inspirational. I challenge you to read it sometime. St. Augustine (354-430AD) is one of my favorite saints because he started his life as a drunkard, gambler, womanizer, etc... and eventually converted to Christianity and became a priest, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. What an amazing turnaround! What is our excuse? Everyone has challenges. God never promised this life would be easy, but He did promise He would help us every step of the way, if we trust Him. Let's pursue that path of holiness and be the saints we are meant to be. It is possible!
